Smells

Ginny and I talked about the different scents we’ve encountered along our running routes. There are some pretty interesting ones and between the two of us, they varied due to the country vs. suburbs lifestyle. What started the conversation was the smell of manure, which is frequent in my neck of the woods. I commented that it was either chicken or pig and that if Shannon were there, he could tell us. It is one of his spiritual gifts, distinguishing manure scents.

Other things I’ve smelled… Yesterday, I passed two dead animals that were very ripe. Speaking of ripe, one route takes me past an orchard which smelled like peaches for a while and now of apples. The orchard smells are my favorite. I also run by a greenhouse which has flowers and mulch in the air. I also love to smell fresh hay being baled and corn being chopped. What about you? Any interesting scents?

hmmmm.....

when I would run on Saturdays with the team, we would be in a park. I loved that early morning, damp summer smell. It was usually burned away quickly by the heat and the humidity though.

Now we are getting to "fall smells" so that is good.

Neighborhood.... exhaust, garbage, dinner cooking from the houses I pass, restaurants, gas stations.

Sorry, no manure pastures here! :)

Long runs: ocean, pot, garbage, incense, fried food (Thankfully, they don't usually all hit at once!)

Mid-weeks: Does smog have a particular scent? Tacos from the street vendors...and I have to fight the urge to stop every time!

I've had a tie for the worst smells: liquid manure at the farm next door to my parents' house and garbage truck in a neighborhood near Jill & Mike's (the bad part about that was that I kept looping through this tiny neighborhood in order to reach 4 miles, so I passed the same stinky garbage truck several times!)

In my own neighborhood, my favorite smell is when someone is cooking out on the grill.

Hey Amy.... is that what they mean when they say "a runner's high??!" If you run past people smoking pot enough you also get high and don't think about the pain your shins, feet, hips, etc are in?!

hmmmm....... :)
