My Longest Run Ever

Well, you all are going to laugh, but I had my longest run ever yesterday of 6 miles! Yay! ha ha The best part was that my leg did not hurt at all - so thank goodness for that.

Besides that, there's nothing really good to say about that run. For some reason it was a mental struggle from the very start. The run previous, I did an excellent job with distracting myself in thought. Not so much on yesterday's run. Uggh. I took a few short power walk breaks, didn't drink enough water, and was just plain tired. I ended up finishing it in 67 minutes, which is probably pretty good considering how bad of a run it felt like it was. Not sure how I'm going to add another seven miles in the next four weeks, but it has to be done. I'm glad to do it, just not sure how. Any tips, advice, words of wisdom?

First off, Jen, don't let this run ruin your running - I HATED the way I ran last week, then came and had my best long run ever yesterday... there is always another run next time - usually within the next day or two :).

Secondly, I never fully ran the 13 miles before my previous 1/2 marathon and was fine - if you do 12 (or maybe even 11) before then, that's good. Just like you're adding another mile or 2 each week b/n now and then, you'll do the same for the day of the race. But, that being said, what is your coach suggesting? Does s/he have a modified schedule for you? And what is your Dr/PT saying?

Jen, you are doing just fine! You RAN the 6 miles...in 67 minutes!! HOLY COW! Good for you! It wasn't "probably pretty good"...it was great!

I agree with Kristen. My team never did more than 10-11 miles. Our first 1/2 is on Sat. and the most I've ever done is 10. Check with your coach, but Kristen is right... if you are adding 1-2 miles a week you will be fine the day of the event. Just remember not to do a big long run the week before Nike. Our race is on Saturday, and this past weekend we only did 7. Gotta love the weeks where the fabulous "taper" happens.

I've also had that too, where 1 week I feel fabulous, and the next week, with the same mileage, I feel horrible. Think about your sleeping that week, what you ate the day/night before (that's a big one for me!), even the week before/week of the "time of the month" can throw everything off. It's that whole "listen to your body" thing.

Look at what you've accomplished! You are training for a 1/2 marathon, you've trained through a stress fracture, you are running miles like never before. You are doing great!

Tip #1: Listen to Grandma!

Okay, that's my only tip. :) For the record, I didn't laugh, I cheered! You really are doing remarkably well and I hope you can embrace your accomplishments proudly (perhaps tip #2.) And I can't tell you how glad I am to hear that your leg didn't hurt at all on your last run! Woo hoo!

Most (if not all) training programs do not bring a runner to their race day distance so you are in good shape, even though it doesn't feel that way. I echo Kristen's thoughts about talking to your coach about a modified schedule now that you're able to run 6 miles w/out pain. I guess that's tip #3. Hm, I thought I only had one. :)

Lots of people are incredibly proud of you.

Try picturing Katie in her shunderwear for distraction. It works every time!

I am actually sitting in my shunderwear right now getting ready for my run. So there! Only because every other pair of shorts is in the dirty laundry!

Jen, before my first half in May, I had only run 10 miles as well. I ended up walking the hill at mile 11 and mile 13 but I finished. And the best part about it is that I shaved 20 minutes off of that time for my second half in September. Everything that I have read says that for a first-time half or full, the goal is to finish. Then, you can work on improving and setting PR's. Congrats on your 6-mile run! We can't wait to hear about your 7!

Thank you all for your encouragement. The comments, suggestions, and cheering are all appreciated greatly! Also, isn't my grandma the best???

I ran 3 miles this Monday and started feeling a slight twinge. Dang! Talked to my coaches and they said to keep my running to twice a week. I was trying to up it to three times this week.

Today I ran .5 miles on the road just to see how it would feel. My leg felt fine. I then biked 6 miles as cross training.

I was able to speak with a coach tonight. She gave me a plan for the rest of my runs and suggested I stick to the treadmill. There's no use risking injury from the pavement at this point. She assures me I'll be good to go on race day, then have a time that I can easily beat during my next half!
